Prof David Coniam: Hong Kong's English proficiency is not slipping

2017-11-17

In an interview with the Hong Kong Economic Journal, Professor David Coniam rejected the idea that the English proficiency of Hong Kong students has declined. The Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction argues instead that the problem lies with the curriculum, teaching and learning, and assessment.

Prior to joining the University, Professor Coniam served as the head of English division at the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. He has witnessed the development of Hong Kong’s English education for nearly 30 years.

Professor Coniam said the Master of Teaching Programme is the university’s flagship master programme and the first master of teaching programme in Hong Kong, whose curriculums are designed by a number of faculties and departments at the University.
