Theory Reading Group engages attendees with Foucault’s thinking

2019-02-01

The Intercultural Studies Area of Strength (IS-AOS) held its 9th Theory Reading Group on Wednesday at the FEHD.

The group gathered to discuss the ruling discourses of higher education in Hong Kong, as well as the meaning of power in our private and professional lives.

The discussion focused on Michel Foucault's ‘Power and Knowledge’, a collection of interviews with the French philosopher.

Foucault, who once argued that "the power to punish is not essentially different from that of educating", is perhaps best known for his examinations of power and knowledge, and how they are used as a form of social control.

IS-AOS launched the Theory Reading Group series last year to promote intellectual exchange between academics, students, and guests from different fields.

Each month, IS-AOS members select a text for discussion. The texts highlight social issues such as social prejudice, racial consciousness, and sexuality.
