FEHD celebrates diversity and inclusion initiative with halal lunch

2019-02-09

Over 40 students enjoyed a New Year Halal Lunch this January, as staff and students met to discuss the challenges and experiences of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Hong Kong.

The lunch helped staff learn about student needs, and students learn about FEHD measures to support diversity, equity and inclusion.

Professor Allan Walker greets everyone across faculties and programmes personally.

FEHD Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist Miron Kumar Bhowmik welcomed staff and students before FEHD Dean Professor Allan Walker spoke of his aim to open the initiative for students from all faculties.

After lunch, students shared their views and experiences with staff about the issues and challenges they face in EdUHK not only academically but also emotionally, socially and culturally.

A Hong Kong-born Pakistani student remarked “This is the first time I’ve this type of programme in the last three years. I’m happy to come here and to have met people who care about me.” Another said “It was great to have someone to talk about our challenges and expectations.”

FEHD’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work is the first initiative of its kind in the EdUHK and one of the few in Hong Kong’s tertiary education sector.

The initiative welcomes and recognizes diversity among students and staff, and celebrates the benefits and strengths they bring to the Faculty.

FEHD supports all staff and students to strive for quality outcomes in learning, teaching and research, and to engage with the communities it serves. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion agenda helps staff and students to move to the Next Level.
