Course (3 credits/ course) Description
Critical Literature Review on Citizenship Education The course will strengthen the analytical skills of candidates and develop their background knowledge in civic and citizenship education. They will identify a range of literature in the area and undertake a critical examination of it. Candidates will develop competence in literature review techniques and in preparing writing suitable for publication. An examination of the theoretical (philosophical/ sociological/ cultural etc) frameworks under-pinning research in one selected area of civic and citizenship education will be undertaken in order to identify methodologies, pedagogy and ethical issues related to the topic.
International Perspectives on Citizenship Education This course will prepare candidates to engage in a detailed investigation through study into civic and citizenship education in different national jurisdictions. It enables the candidate to critically reflect upon major issues relating to the international development of civic and citizenship education and localised practices in providing support. The focus will be to identify major perspectives on policies and practices within in different jurisdictions and evaluate the range of alternative models being employed to support the development of citizen responsibilities and rights.
Researching Citizenship Education: Issues and Directions    This course will provide opportunities for analysing different modes of research in civic and citizenship education, their application to specific researchable questions, and the identification of new research questions relevant to the field and to participants. It will involve a consideration of the relationship between theory and research and the ways in which each can enhance the other.
