The end of education research: What have we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic?

2021-02-10

Staff and students gathered virtually in January to discuss Prof Lim Cher Ping’s presentation on ‘The End of Education Research: What have We Learned from the COVID-19 Pandemic?’

Prof Lim, Associate Dean (International Engagement) and Chair Professor of Learning Technologies and Innovation, examined the impact of the pandemic on the education sector. More than one year since the report of the first COVID-19 case, over 579 million students (around one-third of students worldwide) are still severely affected by school closures.

With remote teaching and learning as the only available mode of engagement between teachers and students during the school closure, the role of teachers to ensure education quality and inclusivity is pivotal. Teacher professional development (TPD) builds the capacity of teachers as a lifelong professional learning process to serve this role. Prof Lim presented and discussed different TPDs at scale (TPD@Scale) models adopted in China, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines and highlighted the key principles that inform these models – (1) just-in-time professional learning and support; (2) professional learning community; and (3) technology-enabled (low and high tech) innovations for scaling.
