Dr Kean Poon wins sliver at Silicon Valley International Invention Festival

2019-07-09

SEC Assistant Professor Dr Kean Poon won Silver at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival this month for her task-switching training for children in poverty.

The task-switching app aims to help children take control of their thoughts and actions to achieve a goal.
The app boosts working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control. Children switch between two simple cognitive tasks, for example,  looking at a picture and choosing a correct answer. The task is then repeated and changed.

A 4-week task-switching trial was held for 109 primary school students who lived below poverty line. The results indicate an association between executive function and academic outcome.

“Much research has linked lower socioeconomic status and executive function. The low cost tasking-switching training app provides an effective solution for disadvantaged children.” Dr Poon said.

As the work of Dr Poon illustrates, we strive to raise the standard and impact of everything we do – whether it is searching for more creative ways to support student learning and making research more socially meaningful.  By allowing our staff the freedom to focus on their work we seek to raise what we do to the NEXT LEVEL.
