Phonetics and Phonology for Education

The phonetics aspect of the course is to provide students with knowledge about speech sounds and the ability to use this knowledge in an applied setting. This includes the ability to transcribe speech sounds in both normal and atypical speech in Cantonese and to build on the fundamentals of the mechanisms involved in speech production and perception for application in clinical settings. The phonology aspect of this course focuses on the phonological issues in Cantonese including the basic phonemic inventory, phonotactic and syllable structure constraints, phonological processes and the tonal phenomena exhibited in the language.
